The Western Interconnection Regional Advisory Body (WIRAB) will host a webinar on the implementation of the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE) 1547 Standard regarding the interconnection and interoperability between distributed energy resources (DERs) and utility electric power systems on August 21, 2018. A revised IEEE 1547 Standard was approved in April of 2018. The new standard leverages the capabilities of inverter-based DERs, allowing them to operate like conventional generators. In this webinar, we will discuss the new standard, how it can unlock advanced features of DERs (such as smart inverter functionality), and why it will enhance bulk power system reliability. We will also discuss the flexibility provided by different options within the standard and why utility regulators may be called on to balance competing interests when implementing the new standard.
- Debbie Lew, GE, will give an overview of the new standard and why it is important for utility regulators to closely consider the implementation options.
- Jens Boemer, EPRI, will describe the flexibility provided by different options within the new standard.
- Michelle Rosier, MN PUC, will describe the process and considerations that the MN PUC is undertaking to implement the new standard.
